about

'Ripples' is first and foremost an ambience.

The work is centred around the pianist and the quasi-aleatoric technique used throughout by the performer, imitating the motion of intimate ripples on the surface of water.
The string ensemble accompany the pianist in creating a sense of textural motion within the confines of static harmony, contributing to the creation of a reverberating atmosphere in the concert hall.
The structure of the work is episodic, and focuses solely on one harmony per section, sustaining tones for long periods of time. This gives the opportunity for listeners to zoom in on the timbral changes
that occur within the isolationist confines of the harmonic sound worlds, evoking the immersive yet lonesome feeling of submerging oneself into a pool of water.
'Ripples' therefore aims to create a series of isolated instances that each at first seem to be separated from each other.
However, like the crashing of the waves, the unity of water and its rippling joins the episodes together
in an inevitable unity of nature.
